The unique story of a white R&B guitar player.
Description
With professional writer/editor Kathleen Greer Greaves, author Robert “Boogie” Bowles takes readers into his life as a musician as he relates, in his memoir, how his life has been working as guitarist for the famous William “Smokey” Robinson, the American R&B and soul singer-songwriter, record producer, and former record executive, and one of the primary figures associated with Motown. In Behind the Boogie: How I Became Guitarist for a Motown Legend, Bowles shares his principles and trials to success with other musicians, which commemorates his 25 years of playing guitar for Motown legend Smokey Robinson.
“I encourage you to open the book and enjoy Boogie’s unique story. It’s a gas”. ----Jerry Butler
Robert “Boogie" Bowles” and I have worked together for well over 20 years. First of all, he is my friend and brother, a man who is very dear to my heart and an important part of my life. Now professionally, he is a top-notch musician. Were this not the case, no matter how much I love him as a person, he could not have worked with me for all these years. As far as I’m concerned, friendship is friendship and business is business. And Boogie would have to be able to take care of his business as a musician to still be with me playing my concerts every night and playing on my recordings. He reads music, which is a requirement to work for me, and is so important for a musician. But he also is an interpreter of music, adding his own “Boogie touch” to a song. God has blessed me to have Boogie in my life. —Smokey Robinson
Boogie has created licks and grooves for such million selling hits as:
“I Will Survive” (voted the #1 dance record ever recorded and the only disco song to receive a Grammy)
“Reunited”
“Shake Your Groove Thing”
“If I Can’t Have You”
“Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel”
“Never Gonna Give You Up”
“Saturday Night Fever” sound track and many more.
